Middle School Main Idea of Non-Fiction Texts Goals

These Common Core aligned goals focus on helping students learn to find the central idea and supporting details in non-fiction texts.

Middle School Main Idea Goals

If you are looking for elementary school, middle school, or high school non-fiction reading comprehension goals, we have them all!
  • Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.2
  • The focus for this goal is on the main idea. You can assess for this using any grade level text– just ask the student after reading what it was mostly about and how they knew that.
  • You can also use main idea and supporting detail worksheets, but you will need to verify that they are grade appropriate. These resources from DePaul university are pretty good.
