About the Educator’s Companion Guide

The Educator Companion Guide supports paraprofessionals (and any adult — new teachers, volunteers, families) working with students at Levels 1–3 of the Reading Comprehension Re-Imagined series. It gives clear, step-by-step guidance for two levels of support: AAC users and students with limited verbal responses and beginning readers

Inside you’ll find:

• Before, during, and after reading strategies at both levels — choosing a book, concepts about print, prediction, tracking words, sight words, decoding support, and comprehension questioning.
• Coaching tips for common moments, including how much wait time to give (5+ seconds), how to build independence through least-to-most prompting (no help → rephrase → choices → point to), and what to do when a student shuts down (wait time → easier question → preferred question → switch activities and return later).
• A data collection sheet to track accuracy and comprehension across repeated reads of the same book, so every session produces usable progress data.

About The Series

The Reading Comprehension Re-Imagined Series is designed to support the reading comprehension development of all communicators by letting them read the books they love while asking them the questions that help them grow. The five levels of the series are based on how students communicate, not what they can decode. 

• Level 1 Point & Choose is for AAC users and minimally verbal students. It includes teacher facing and student facing questions, with picture boards for students to choose their responses from. 
• Level 2 Words & Pictures features large, adaptive writing lines, picture choice boards, and short response questions that support students who are able to respond to simple questions about stories in 1 to 5 words. The open-response questions are ones that are easier for students to answer, like who is on the page, while the picture-response questions are ones that are more challenging to answer like what the character needs.
• Level 3 Art & Sentences has smaller adaptive writing lines and lots of opportunities to draw for students who are able to answer basic questions about a story on their own but are working on ordering events for a story, identifying problems, and communicating more completely about what they read.
• Level 4 Adapted Novel Study is for students who are beginning to read early chapter books, but need support tracking characters, talking about the plot of the story across chapters, making predictions, and thinking about what they have read. It has 25 chapters worth of questions for one book.
• Level 5 Read, Draw, Think has two different daily reading logs, 5a for fiction and 5b for non-fiction books. These are for students who are able to read independently, but frequently shift books and decode without slowing down to think about what they have read.
