About the Weather Routines: Meteorologist’s Report & Weather Detective
Bring real-world weather observation into your classroom with this two-part, leveled weather unit designed for intensive special education settings! Students step into the role of meteorologist and detective as they practice describing weather, making connections between weather and appropriate clothing/activities, and using observational reasoning skills — all with built-in differentiation for a range of communication and academic levels.
Meteorologist’s Report (Levels 1 & 2)
Students become the meteorologist and deliver their own weather report! They’ll record the day’s temperature, categorize it (from Really Cold to Really Hot), and choose weather-appropriate clothing before writing or dictating what to pack and what to do on a day like today.
Level 1 offers a structured, visual choice format with clothing icons to circle and sentence starters with picture-supported lines for packing and activity ideas.
Level 2 streamlines the format with open-ended writing lines, encouraging more independent sentence construction for students.
Weather Detective (Levels 1 & 2)
Students put on their detective hats and analyze a video filmed outdoors somewhere in the world. Using observational clues — the weather itself, how people are dressed, visible plant life, and (in Level 2) additional environmental details — students gather evidence before making inferences about the season, temperature, and location, and determine whether the footage shows normal weather or a natural disaster.
Level 1 keeps the clue-gathering simple with three core categories and a straightforward guess-and-circle format.
Level 2 adds a fourth clue category, an option to draw the weather if it isn’t otherwise visible, and asks students to stretch their reasoning further.
