Vocabulary is one of the most overlooked areas of need in reading comprehension. We talk about students figuring out words from context clues but to do that, you have to be able to understand the context and to know how to find meaning from it. It is hard to grasp the main idea of a text if you don’t understand the words in it– and decoding is a lot easier if you know prefixes and root words. That’s where these standards come in. From elementary school to middle and high school, the Common Core has strong standards on vocabulary that you can use to write useful goals that have a side benefit of being easy to teach– if the goal is on root words, you know exactly what you are targeting in group.
In grades 6, 7, and 8 figuring out how to understand words in a text is an essential skill, so check out these goals!
