Multiplication and division are often taken to mean rote memorization of facts or procedural adherence to the rules of long division. But multiplication and division can be so much more. They can be teaching students how to use hundreds charts to solve problems, understanding why 1/2 is the same as .5, and building a sense of when an answer gotten with a calculator is reasonable. For many students, straight goals on memorizing facts are not appropriate– many students will learn the facts one day and forget them the next. These goals, however, can be about using strategies and supports to find the answers or understanding the underlying principles of the algorithms. The pages below have Common Core aligned goals curated for each grade– but if you have a student who needs to understand the concepts behind the algorithms, check out the elementary goals first to get a sense of where the foundation of the procedures begins and then move onto the middle or high school goals.
