Ahh, the joys of algebra. Depending on where you live, it is a must pass class for high school students. For example, in the state of New Hampshire, students can’t graduate high school without passing algebra. We could give a lot of real world reasons why algebra is useful but the biggest reasons is because students HAVE to master these skill at, at least, a basic level in order to move onto the next phase of their lives. And algebra doesn’t come intuitively to many students. It is the lands of backwards– a field of mathematics based on doing things in reverse, which challenges students who might still be learning how to do the basic operations forwards. And for higher students, algebra goals are a perfect way to build in special education services around what the students are actually doing in class– because they will be doing it in geometry as well as algebra 1 and 2. At the same time, algebra doesn’t make the best goals for elementary students so these goals start at the middle school level and go up until the high school level.
