Browse CCS aligned IEP goals on addition and subtraction from building concepts to negative numbers

Ahh, addition and subtraction. The most fundamental algorithms for students to master– and often the most challenging. So many students hit high school algebra and struggle on problems because they forgot basic addition or subtraction facts or had no idea what to do with negative numbers. There are strong arguments both for providing students with access to calculators and for helping them build fundamental computational skills so that they know if an answer they got on their calculator is a reasonable one. And the Common Core  has standards for addition and subtraction right up through high school– ideally focused on polynomials, but still, these basic skills spiral through the Common Core year after year. The pages below have Common Core aligned goals for each grade band– but if you have a student struggling with basic addition or subtraction, check out the elementary goals first to get a sense of where the foundation of computation begins and then move onto the middle or high school goals.
