Fractions are one of the most misunderstood aspects of mathematics. They are so fundamental to cooking (can you double or triple a recipe without adding or multiplying fractions?) and to measurement. Yet, our instruction of them is so rote and students with disabilities often struggle to hold onto algorithms and numbers that have no meaning in their brains. Unfortunately, Common Core standards for fractions end at elementary school. Geometry, however lives on and is foundational to passing high school mathematics classes as well as day to day utility.
