Know Yourself is the first lesson in Unit 2, Own Your Story. This lesson focuses on self-awareness from what it is to what students see as their own strengths and who they want to be.

Lesson Summary & Teaching Notes

Summary: Section 1 asks students to think about how self-aware they are. Section 2 includes a brief video explaining self-awareness. In section 3, students are asked to rank their strengths (like kind or fair) and to think of other strengths they have. Section 3 is an agree/disagree movement activity that gets more into their strengths and preferences. In section 4, they are asked to think about how they see themselves, how others see them, and who they want to be. Section 5 is an extension activity where they can create playlists, visuals, or writing pieces that talk about who they are.

Teaching notes: One challenge students have with self-awareness is being hard on themselves. This lesson has been designed to help them see their strengths beyond things like good at basketball or math.

Approximate length: 40-60 minutes (depends on how much you have them share during the Would You Rather activity)

About the curriculum: School success relies on key skills that students are rarely taught. The goal of this curriculum is to level the playing field and to directly teach the executive functioning, self-regulation, and life skills that all students need to succeed in school. Through 20 lessons across four units, this year long curriculum will help students build a foundation for success in school and life– and leave them with an individualized success workbook at the end of the program.
