Get Meta About Assignments is the fourth lesson in Unit 3, Sharpen Your Study Skills. This lesson focuses on metacognitive strategies for breaking down and managing longer assignments and for understanding complex reading passages.
Lesson Summary & Teaching Notes
Summary: Section one is a self-reflection of how well students feel they do breaking down assignments, getting them done in time, and managing reading assignments. The next two sections are on what metacognition is and the steps of plan, monitor, and reflect. The next, and largest, section is on how to break down big assignments. Students break down three made up assignments and then have to break down an assignment of theirs. From there, the lesson pivots in metacognitive reading strategies, mostly focused on SQ3R, which the students are asked to apply on two passages before applying it on their own in an extension activity.
Teaching notes: This one looks longer than it is because the final extension activity is a reading passage with questions. That adds to the length but is less work than a lot of the other extensions! It is also a bit of a hodgepodge lesson, focused on breaking down big assignments and reading comprehension strategies.
Approximate length: 120-140 minutes
About the curriculum: School success relies on key skills that students are rarely taught. The goal of this curriculum is to level the playing field and to directly teach the executive functioning, self-regulation, and life skills that all students need to succeed in school. Through 20 lessons across four units, this year long curriculum will help students build a foundation for success in school and life– and leave them with an individualized success workbook at the end of the program.
