Have a Growth Mindset is the fifth and final lesson in Unit 2, Own Your Story. This lesson focuses on understanding growth mindsets, their importance, and how to cultivate them.
Lesson Summary & Teaching Notes
Summary: This is one of the shorter lessons in the unit. It starts with students self-evaluating their own mindsets. Then it moves into a quick comparison and definition of growth and fixed mindsets. From there, the lesson focuses on growth mindsets in action with clips from famous athletes and a music video. Then the lesson pivots to famous failures, with students needing to guess the famous failures in a video. Finally, the lesson ends with an extension activity where students are asked to choose from an art, music, or writing focused project.
Teaching notes: The famous failure section is one video. It works well if you pause the video before each person is unveiled.
Approximate length: 50-70 minutes
About the curriculum: School success relies on key skills that students are rarely taught. The goal of this curriculum is to level the playing field and to directly teach the executive functioning, self-regulation, and life skills that all students need to succeed in school. Through 20 lessons across four units, this year long curriculum will help students build a foundation for success in school and life– and leave them with an individualized success workbook at the end of the program.
