Teaching & Leading
How to create, teach, and thrive in inclusive classrooms
Get Organized is the fourth lesson in Unit 1, Develop Healthy Habits. This lesson focuses on digital and physical organization from learning how to delete emails to organizing a backpack.
Lesson Summary & Teaching Notes
Summary: Section 1 has students self-reflect on their physical and digital organization skills. Section 2 is on physical organization at home, with students looking at photos of clean/messy bedrooms and evaluating what they like and do not like. Section 3 focuses on physical organization at school of lockers and backpacks. Then, the guided notes end and students complete a digital activity on organizing their email inboxes, creating folders in Drive, creating bookmarks and shortcuts in Chrome, and unenrolling from old Google classes.
Teaching notes:
- The digital activity is set up to work with Chrome and Google for classroom. It can work for other email/folder systems, but the photos won’t line up well. We recommend teaching through the notes and slideshow first and then having the students do the digital activity on their own. Keeping them all at the same pace on it is challenging. We have included a lot of screen shots and how tos in the student activity so it should work well as an independent activity.
- This lesson includes a digital activity. The activity is embedded at the bottom of the page. If you cannot make a copy of it from there, you can make a copy for your class from this link.
Approximate length: 70-90 minutes (depends on how well students know how to take screenshots, organize emails, organize Drive, and create bookmarks/shortcuts)
About the curriculum: School success relies on key skills that students are rarely taught. The goal of this curriculum is to level the playing field and to directly teach the executive functioning, self-regulation, and life skills that all students need to succeed in school. Through 20 lessons across four units, this year long curriculum will help students build a foundation for success in school and life– and leave them with an individualized success workbook at the end of the program.
