How to create, teach, and thrive in inclusive classrooms
Take Notes is the second lesson in Unit 3, Sharpen Your Study Skills. This lesson focuses on the why and how of note taking in class.
Lesson Summary & Teaching Notes
Summary: The lesson starts with a self-reflection on note taking and explanation of research on the benefits of taking notes. Then it moves into generic note taking tips. Finally, it moves into three specific note taking strategies– Cornell, mind maps, and outlines. Then it ends with an extension activity where students are asked to take notes on a video on note taking.
Teaching notes: This can be a pretty quick lesson but sometimes students really struggle with the end on actually taking notes. If you have time, it is helpful to have them practice even more free hand notes. The lessons in this class all use intensely guided notes to keep their focus (and keep them caught up) which is the exact opposite of best practices in note taking. Students don’t often seem to catch the irony– but if they do, it makes for a fun conversation. The videos on the note taking strategies are super fast and are much easier to follow if you slow them way down.
Approximate length: 70-90 minutes
About the curriculum: School success relies on key skills that students are rarely taught. The goal of this curriculum is to level the playing field and to directly teach the executive functioning, self-regulation, and life skills that all students need to succeed in school. Through 20 lessons across four units, this year long curriculum will help students build a foundation for success in school and life– and leave them with an individualized success workbook at the end of the program.
