One of the most important skills that students can master is how to write a complete paragraph with a topic sentence, details, and a concluding sentence. That sets them up for essays and for success in their subject areas classes, as well as in English. These goals break down essay and paragraph writing from the most basic of just writing on a topic with no structure to four or five paragraph essays. Given the importance of this skill, we have elementary goals from grades two on up, middle school, and high school goals on paragraph and, at the highest levels, essay writing. If the upper grades ones feel too ambitious for your student, look down the grade bands for inspiration– your student might need to start with the basics before they move onto essays.
