About Level 5B: Non-Fiction

Level 5B Non-Fiction of the Reading Comprehension Re-Imagined series is a reading journal designed to be used with any non-fiction book for readers who often change books day to day. Here is what is included: 

• Each of the 20 pages in the journal is unique, with a mixture of main idea and detail questions, graphic organizers, and connection activities. Every page asks the student what book they are reading, to rate one thing about the book, to draw or diagram, and one additional question.
• The journal pages are designed to take only 5 to 10 minutes, to be enjoyable for students, to work if the student changes books day to day, and to build students’ understanding of what they read. They were designed to support independent reading in special education and inclusive settings.

The journal pages are in two formats — adaptive writing lines and regular. Both are included in this product and are otherwise identical.

About The Series

The Reading Comprehension Re-Imagined Series is designed to support the reading comprehension development of all communicators by letting them read the books they love while asking them the questions that help them grow. The five levels of the series are based on how students communicate, not what they can decode. 

• Level 1 Point & Choose is for AAC users and minimally verbal students. It includes teacher facing and student facing questions, with picture boards for students to choose their responses from. 
• Level 2 Words & Pictures features large, adaptive writing lines, picture choice boards, and short response questions that support students who are able to respond to simple questions about stories in 1 to 5 words. The open-response questions are ones that are easier for students to answer, like who is on the page, while the picture-response questions are ones that are more challenging to answer like what the character needs.
• Level 3 Art & Sentences has smaller adaptive writing lines and lots of opportunities to draw for students who are able to answer basic questions about a story on their own but are working on ordering events for a story, identifying problems, and communicating more completely about what they read.
• Level 4 Adapted Novel Study is for students who are beginning to read early chapter books, but need support tracking characters, talking about the plot of the story across chapters, making predictions, and thinking about what they have read. It has 25 chapters worth of questions for one book.
• Level 5 Read, Draw, Think has two different daily reading logs, 5a for fiction and 5b for non-fiction books. These are for students who are able to read independently, but frequently shift books and decode without slowing down to think about what they have read. 
• The Educator Companion Guide has data collection sheets and strategies for paraprofessionals to use while reading with students across levels 1-3.
